A True Story

In 1974, a young man was admitted to Cumberland Heights. He was addicted to alcohol. He had lost his job, his wife and his hope that anyone or anything could help him. No matter how many times he tried, how many vows he took or promises he made, he could not stop drinking.

At the time, Cumberland Heights was an all-male facility with 32 beds and 16 staff members. What the young man found there were people who understood how he felt, people who loved him when he could not love himself, people who gave him hope. He found a clean, comfortable room and delicious food when he felt unworthy of even the most basic accommodations. He found green fields and open spaces where he could be alone to meditate. He found new friends and a network of support that would sustain him when he left the protection of the center. And he found a place he could return to anytime, where he was always welcome and where there was always someone to talk to.

Today, Cumberland Heights is one of the largest and most respected centers for addiction treatment in the country. With over 100 beds and 200 staff, the campus now houses modern medical facilities and treatment programs for men, women, adolescents and families. The center has grown and changed over the years, but some things have remained the same. I know this because I am the young man who was admitted here more than 30 years ago. I am now the CEO of Cumberland Heights. And while there have been many changes and improvements in addiction treatment, one thing has never changed: Cumberland Heights remains a special place where patients and families can find the same healing environment, the same loving care, the same hope and understanding, the same beautiful grounds and delicious food, and the same home away from home that I found so many years ago.
