Michael's Story:

“Before Cumberland Heights, I struggled with all forms of alcohol and drugs. Heroin eventually brought me to my knees. When I was 21 and close to getting a finance degree, I used the money my grandparents gave me for college to fuel my drug addiction. With that and a laundry list of consequences, I checked into Cumberland Heights, my first and only treatment center.

I was terrified of withdrawing and what my life would be like after treatment. I was surprised when I was greeted by a nursing staff that genuinely cared about me and my well-being. They kept checking on me throughout the first week while I went through withdrawals.

After detox, I went to groups daily where I learned more about my addiction and AA. I learned how I had the disease of alcoholism and that it centered in my mind. I learned it wasn’t just the drink and the drug, but more so the way my brain operated.

The staff put together a plan I could follow to maintain long-term sobriety. I am now a little over 10 years sober. I continue to go to AA meetings every week and work the 12 Steps to the best of my ability. I have a sponsor and I sponsor others. Most importantly, I have a relationship with my Higher Power.

Today, I have a great job and a beautiful wife and daughter. But more than anything, I have a purpose – to help other sick and suffering alcoholics. I have other obligations in life, but if I don’t put my recovery first, everything else will come last. Cumberland Heights helped me build a foundation that is sturdy and can weather any storm.”

The Young Adult Program at Cumberland Heights

Over the last 60 years, Cumberland Heights has grown to meet the changing needs of the people we serve. In response to an increasing number of young adults seeking recovery, the Young Adult Program began in 2012 to address the specific issues facing 18-24 year olds. The Young Men’s Program is currently a standalone program offered for those up to age 29, which allows for targeted services and peer groups with similar needs. The Young Adult Program for women is now integrated into the Women’s Program.
