Volunteering benefits during recoveryWhen it comes to addiction recovery, there are so many diverse approaches that can be taken. From medication to exercise, to faith-based support and experiential activities such as rock climbing, a person can discover so many wonderful ways to connect with others – and themselves – on a deeper level. A beautiful aspect of recovery that many find after they’ve been working diligently on their own journey to recovery is the concept of volunteering. Even faith-based, 12-Step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) emphasize the value of giving back to the community through service. Let’s take a look at some of the amazing benefits that volunteering can provide you with – both directly and indirectly.

In 2015, Forbes Magazine listed the following benefits of volunteering:

  • Provides people with the sense of having more time
  • Development of new skills
  • Builds empathy and strengthens relationships

In a brief review published by the Corporation for National & Community Service, it was emphasized the volunteering can lower rates of depression – something that many people in addiction recovery tackle on a daily basis. Greater life satisfaction means that individuals are likely to live longer; improved health outcomes can also increase a person’s self-esteem and confidence in their recovery. Through volunteering, many people in recovery find a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

Addiction takes us away from everything that we need to live a happy and healthy life, but volunteering can help us to strengthen the spiritual aspects of ourselves and build stronger connections with people whom we otherwise wouldn’t have.
