The First ASAM Certified Treatment Center in Tennessee
In December of 2019, Cumberland Heights became the first addiction treatment center in the state of Tennessee to receive certification from the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). At that time, Cumberland Heights was also one of the first in the nation to receive this honor.
The ASAM Level of Care certification, developed in partnership with CARF International, provides an independent and comprehensive assessment of a center’s capacity to deliver services which meet the Levels of Care described in The ASAM Criteria.
The ASAM Criteria
The guidelines provided by the ASAM are the most widely used criteria for the placement, transfer, continued stay or discharge of patients in an addiction treatment program. Both adolescent and adult treatment plans are created with the structure, degree of medical management, safety and security of services as outlined by this program.
If a center follows the ASAM guidelines, they will assess and place patients into the appropriate level of care based on six dimensions:
- Acute intoxication/withdrawal potential
- Biomedical conditions and complications
- Emotional, behavioral or cognitive conditions and complications
- Readiness to change
- Relapse, continued use or continued problem potential
- Recovery/living environment
The ASAM levels of care include early intervention, outpatient services, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization services, residential programming, and inpatient services. Depending on the assessment of the above six dimensions, a patient will be placed in the clinically necessary level of care. Each treatment center is evaluated based on these services.

The ASAM Criteria is considered the nation’s most respected and comprehensive set of standards for the provision of outcome-oriented care. Therefore, this level of certification provides an indicator for patients, insurers and family members that a treatment center provides evidence-based care.
