At Cumberland Heights, we understand that adolescence involves major physical and psychological changes — the adolescent is trying to establish a personal identity and peer acceptance while dealing with powerful hormones that create a whirlwind of emotion and passion. When substance abuse or
addiction is added to the mix, the situation becomes even more volatile. Often, a structured teen drug treatment program can help a teen and his/her family find solutions.
Cumberland Heights’ teen drug rehab programs provide a wide range of services for adolescents ages 13 to 18 who are struggling with substance abuse or dependency. We offer a 30-day primary residential program specifically designed to address the youth’s chemical dependency, an extended residential program and intensive outpatient treatment. Because research shows that family participation increases the likelihood of positive outcomes, we encourage family involvement in every phase of treatment.
Choosing a teen drug treatment center is an important first step in recovery and should not be taken lightly. Cumberland Heights’ youth programs are based on a time-tested approach that integrates the 12-step philosophy with a respect for developmental issues that adolescents face. We strive to assess the strengths and resiliency of each young person and develop a treatment plan that emphasizes these positive attributes.
Cumberland Heights’ teen drug rehab model consists of several components designed to meet the varying needs of adolescents. It includes:
• Individualized treatment planning based on the understanding that adolescents enter teen drug treatment in varying degrees of readiness to change. Each treatment plan identifies concrete treatment goals, expectations and mutually agreed-upon time frames.
• A comprehensive biopsychosocial evaluation, which identifies strengths and problem areas to be addressed.
• Psychiatric evaluation and ongoing care (if indicated) to address mental health issues that often accompany adolescent substance abuse.
• A structured yet flexible daily schedule that includes individual and group counseling, addiction-related education groups, chores, schoolwork, 12-step meetings and recreational activities to help patients learn new skills and alternatives to substance-using behavior.
• Peer monitoring to help patients build the internal resources necessary to overcome destructive peer pressure.
• Life skills training to help patients learn how to communicate more effectively, manage anger, identify and change self-sabotaging behavior and develop support systems.
Our program of drug rehab for teens includes several components:
Individual Therapy
Teen patients can expect individual (one-on-one) sessions with a trained, professional counselor. The focus and style of these sessions are tailored to the needs of each young person.
Group Therapy
Group sessions help patients regain their ability to function with others. In group sessions, patients work on communication and relationship skills. They also learn to identify with others, fostering appropriate attitudes and behaviors. Patients often find that group therapy provides a sense of relief because they can, for the first time, talk with others experiencing similar problems.
Youth Program CARE group
CARE, or Community Awareness-Raising Exercise, is a group experience in which youth patients are held accountable by their peers for behaviors that interfere with the haven-like atmosphere of an effective adolescent drug rehab program. The young person stands before his/her peers and allows them to help identify the thoughts and feelings behind the offensive behavior. CARE group members then brainstorm awareness-raising exercises and vote on which are most likely to help their community member. The young person has the unique opportunity to feel the concern of peers and staff, carry out his/her exercises, and find understanding and a chance to make amends ? an exercise that enhances the experience of all community members.
Academics
Keeping up with schoolwork makes it easier for adolescent patients to return to school when teen drug treatment ends. Cumberland Heights supervises and encourages young patients to continue their academic work to ensure that the patient does not lose academic standing while in treatment. The youth program is staffed with highly trained and licensed educators and addresses any academic deficiencies so the patient can return to school after adolescent drug rehab. Parents can generally work with their child’s guidance counselor to set up an individualized study program. When the patient fulfills his or her academic responsibility, Cumberland Heights’ educational staff can help ensure that the appropriate credit is applied to the patient’s school record.
Family involvement
Family issues commonly contribute to an adolescent’s problems. For this reason, we believe family therapy is critical to the teen drug rehab process, and as such, families are expected to participate in weekly family counseling (either face-to-face or by teleconference), a weekly multi-family group and a four-day intensive family program. In family therapy, we help teens and their family members build or rebuild a healthy family system. Family therapy doesn’t just help the patient; it can be very healing to family members as well.
Continuing care planning
Preparing adolescents to re-enter the community is an important part of the teen drug treatment process. Continuing care planning is designed to assist the family in developing a recovery plan that clearly spells out the next steps to support gains made in treatment. In some cases, this means helping arrange for further treatment or therapy or for the patient to attend meetings in his or her community so that the patient has a network of support outside of adolescent residential treatment centers.
Youth extended care
Cumberland Heights offers a 90-day Extended Care Program for adolescents who have completed primary treatment. The program allows adolescents to continue the personal recovery and family work begun in primary treatment.
Youth outpatient program
Cumberland Heights also offers youth outpatient services for those in the early stages of chemical dependency. Treatment is designed so young people can continue their school and outside responsibilities while still receiving the benefits of adolescent drug rehab. This outpatient program provides intensive therapy three hours a day, four days a week.
Because teenage years are characterized by great physical and emotional changes, adolescents with addiction face extraordinary challenges. Left untreated, addiction can greatly compromise an adolescent’s emotional, social, spiritual, family and academic life. It can also progress quickly and become more difficult to manage in adulthood.
Our teen drug treatment program at Cumberland Heights is a safe, supportive environment for young men and women ages 13 to 18 struggling with drug or alcohol addiction. Drug rehab for teens is specially tailored to help adolescents become strong adults with a lifetime of sobriety before them. At Cumberland Heights, we consider the unique needs of adolescents. We strive to provide a peaceful, supportive setting with room for exploration, meditation and fun. In addition to a full range of therapeutic programs, we offer on-site educational services so patients can continue to focus on their education.
