Cumberland Heights recognizes addiction is a family disease and developed its family program to help educate and guide patients’ families as they navigate their way toward recovery.
During our Family Care Program held at Cumberland Heights, our clinical staff educates loved ones of the patient on how addiction affects the entire family. The Family Program’s foremost goal is for each member to heal, which begins with the understanding of addiction as a disease. Families begin to see addictive behavior not as a personal or moral condition, but as the symptom of an illness, often beyond one’s control.
We show families how to rebuild vital pieces of their relationships, including trust, boundaries, and communication utilizing experiential and therapeutic group exercise. Clinical staff will also explore family dynamics and addiction in an effort to identify how to rebuild trust, create healthy boundaries, and use safe, clear communication.
Families generally attend the Family Care Program during the Third (3rd) or Fourth (4th) week of a patient’s treatment progress, however other dates and accommodations can generally be made if this poses a problem for your family or travel schedule. Please call our Family Care Department at 615-432-3191 if you’d like to inquire about other potential dates. Family members will have interaction with the patient for about one third of the program’s schedule.

Sunday Family Recovery Day
Because family participation in treatment is critical to the healing of the family, including the patient, Cumberland Heights sets aside each Sunday as Family Recovery Day. Your presence greatly increases the recovery outcomes for your loved one in treatment as well as for you, your family, and generations to come. Although all activities are important throughout the day, it is essential families follow the schedule and attend the 1:15PM Sunday family recovery groups.
In addition, we strongly encourage you to join us earlier in the morning for our non-denominational Chapel Services beginning at 11:00AM or Mindfulness Meditation Practice also at 11:00AM with Lunch (~ 12:00PM) immediately after. Sunday morning activities set the stage for you and your loved one to attend these necessary services at 1:15PM. You will begin a journey to whole family healing which you will not regret!
