What is Sober Living?

For those who struggle with addiction, everyday life is full of temptations. Aside from potential stressors and triggers, the availability of drugs or alcohol within work, home or social environments often enables substance abuse. Living an abstinence-based lifestyle is much harder when you are regularly confronted with the choice to drink or use, particularly in the early days of recovery.

As a result, many people choose to make a sober living residence their home following residential treatment. Sober living residences are substance-free environments that hold residents accountable for their actions through regular meetings, house rules, community events and certain expectations. Sober living eliminates the worry that there may be drugs or alcohol in your home, creating a safe space where you can decompress and relax in healthy and productive ways. Sober living residences also give you a built-in community of recovery-minded individuals who are all following the same path to a healthy, sober life.

Who Should Choose Sober Living?

Sober living is most often a transitional step between regular recovery treatment and independent life. It’s most commonly recommended for people who are leaving residential treatment and do not have a safe environment to return to — perhaps they were living with enabling roommates, or come from a difficult family environment. If you or your loved one is seeking a safe and supportive living space as they regain their footing in society, sober living might be the right choice.

These residences foster teamwork and responsibility among those living in them — household chores are shared, interpersonal relationships must be managed and others’ space, property and views must be respected. Sober living can be a good learning opportunity for those who want to work on their interpersonal or independent living skills and are ready to meet new people.

Sober living is essential for those who have reached the end of their recovery treatment program but who are not yet ready to live on their own. Returning to a lifestyle in which you must hold yourself accountable for your actions is incredibly difficult for those whose lives have been ruled by addiction for so long. The danger of relapse is very high in early recovery because many people attempt to jump back into independence too quickly after rehabilitation. Remember that there is no shame in asking for extra help, support and guidance as you make this step, and sober living can be an ideal middle ground between full-time care and complete independence.

We offer two men’s sober living residences: Keep it Simple House (Murfreesboro, TN) and Keystone House (Nashville, TN); and two women’s sober living residences: Searchlight House (Gallatin, TN) and Honest Manor House (Nashville, TN).
